Chin Augmentation

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is often performed alongside rhinoplasty to create better facial balance and harmony. A well-shaped nose alone won’t achieve its full aesthetic potential if paired with a recessed or weak chin, as it can make the nose appear as though it’s sticking out from the face. To address this, I often evaluate the facial profile using the Ricketts Esthetic Line (E-line)(SHOW SAMPLE ILLUSTRATION OF E LINE) — a well-established guideline in facial analysis that helps determine if a patient would benefit from chin augmentation to complement their rhinoplasty.

For patients who need augmentation, I use a Gore-Tex chin implant. Gore-Tex integrates seamlessly with the surrounding tissues, providing a natural feel and appearance. It’s a biocompatible material that stays securely in place and is designed to last a lifetime. Chin augmentation with Gore-Tex not only enhances the projection and definition of the lower face but also significantly improves the overall facial proportions, especially when done in conjunction with nose surgery.

Whether done as a standalone procedure or paired with rhinoplasty, chin augmentation helps create a more balanced, confident profile — giving the face a more sculpted and harmonious appearance.

Pre-Procedure Guidelines

Pre-Operative Guidelines
To ensure a smooth surgical experience and optimal healing, please review and follow the instructions below before your scheduled chin augmentation procedure:

1. Medical Evaluation & Preparation
Attend all pre-operative consultations and complete any requested lab tests or imaging.

Disclose your complete medical history, including past surgeries, allergies, current medications, and existing medical conditions.

Inform your surgeon if you’ve had any recent infections, illnesses, or dental procedures.

2. Medications & Supplements
Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements 10 days before surgery, unless otherwise advised.

Continue maintenance medications only if approved by your surgeon.

Do not take any over-the-counter medications or supplements without prior clearance.

3. Smoking & Alcohol
Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery. Smoking significantly delays healing and increases the risk of complications.

Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours before your procedure.

4. Fasting
Do not eat or drink anything (including water) after midnight the night before your surgery, unless instructed otherwise by your doctor or anesthesiologist.

If your surgery is scheduled in the afternoon, follow your anesthesiologist’s specific instructions.

5. Day of Surgery
Wear clean, loose-fitting clothes that open at the front. Avoid tight or pull-over garments.

Remove all jewelry, makeup, nail polish, piercings, and contact lenses.

Arrive at the surgical facility with a responsible adult who can take you home and assist you during the first 24 hours of recovery.

6. Prepare for Recovery
Set up a quiet, comfortable recovery area with pillows to help keep your head elevated.

Have your prescribed medications, compression garment, and soft foods ready in advance.

Plan for at least a few days off from work or social activities to allow for proper rest.

Post Procedure Guidelines

Following your chin augmentation procedure, proper aftercare is essential to ensure safe healing and optimal results. Please review and adhere to the following post-operative instructions:

1. Wound Care & Bleeding
It is normal to experience mild blood oozing from the incision site for up to 24 hours after surgery.

After 24 hours, remove the napkin dressing and leave the wound open to air. Do not apply any new dressing unless instructed.

You may resume bathing after removing the dressing, but keep the wound dry at all times.

Clean the incision gently using hydrogen peroxide or clean water with a cotton swab. Always dry the area carefully after cleaning.

2. Swelling & Activity Restrictions
Mild swelling is expected. To help reduce swelling:

Begin light walking around the house as soon as you feel able.

Keep your head elevated while resting or sleeping.

Avoid strenuous activities such as jogging, weightlifting, or aerobic exercise for at least 2 weeks or until cleared by your surgeon.

3. Compression Garment
Wear your compression garment continuously (24 hours a day) for the first 7 days, removing only when necessary for cleaning.

After the first week, wear the garment during waking hours for the next 3–4 weeks.

For best results, continued use for up to 3 months is encouraged.

4. Medications & Pain Management
Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed.

Complete the full 7-day course of antibiotics, even if you feel well.

Over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications may be taken as needed. Chin augmentation discomfort is usually mild to moderate.

Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours, especially while taking pain medication.

Do not smoke. Smoking slows healing and increases the risk of complications.

5. Infection Prevention & Warning Signs
Infections may appear around 1 week post-surgery. Contact the clinic immediately if you notice:

Pus, foul-smelling, or discolored discharge (bloody, yellow, or green)

Redness, warmth, or excessive swelling at the incision site

Fever, chills, or a general feeling of illness

Severe or sharp pain is not normal. Notify your surgeon immediately if you experience intense or persistent pain.
